It’s been thirty years since Swat Kats was stricken from Cartoon Network. That has not stopped the brave writers, artists, and even voice actors from coming together once more! The new comic book is titled “Megakat City Has Fallen” and continues right where the TV show ended. The Team decided to launch a Kickstarter to make this comic book happen.
Kickstarters are a way to crowdfund projects. Regular people like you and me can back a project and become Backers. We basically promise to give the creators money if a goal is met. Backer Tiers are options that a person who wants to donate selects. The Tier they choose comes with fun rewards. It’s like buying a bundled package. Whatever Tier a person chooses (plus any additional add-ons like the epic t-shirts and pins), is what the Backer will be charged when the campaign ends.
The original goal for Swat Kats was $40,000 to launch their new comic book. The goal was obliterated in less than an hour. That means the Kickstarter was a success and the comic book will officially be made! The awesome thing with Kickstarters is that the more money a project raises, the more awesome Stretch Goals are unlocked. Already the hardcover Kickstarter exclusive book will have an additional short story due to hitting a Stretch Goal. If the project ends up raising $500,000, the crew plans to create a fully animated motion comic of Megakat City Has Fallen voiced by all the original voice actors!
There’s all kinds of fun goodies at the different Tiers including comic book blind bags, a hardcover exclusive version of the comic plus short stories, tons of cover variant arts, signed prints, a glow in the dark cover, t-shirts, posters, and more! At the lowest Tier of $15, the Backer will receive a downloadable digital pdf of the comic in its entirety.
Ahsoka and I are super excited and decided to have a Swat Kats Halloween Party! We plan to watch the original animated show, eat pizza, and have a great time. Of course, I got the crafting urge and could not resist… making T-Bone! Ahsoka made these awesome downloadable Cubee Crafts that anyone can print out and create. All you need is a cutting tool and you can get started. Adult supervision is needed for using scissors or sharp blades.
I printed out T-Bone because, come on, he’s voiced by Charlie Adler. You bet I was going to do the character voiced by my favorite VA (*cough* Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe Resolute and Renegades). Now I will admit, this was my very first Cubee Craft ever and I maaaay have chosen a rather ambitious one for my first attempt.
Cubee Crafts create a physical figure in a very voxel fashion, like a Minecraft character. Cubee Crafts do not need any tape or glue. The tabs are simply folded in place after they are fed through the slits. This did not stop me from using a bunch of tape haha! I wanted to make sure that T-Bone stayed together for as long as possible.
I used a sharp-edged metal ruler to pre-fold along all the fold lines. I bent the paper in the opposite way it would be folded to precrease my lines. This step may not have been needed but did make the final assembly very satisfying.
At the end I realized his head was purely a box… that could be opened and closed at will! I could not resist adding a fun T-Bone quote inside his head!
Overall I am superbly happy with how he turned out! It was definitely a bit more challenging than I expected, although I am sure that is mostly due to how unfamiliar I was with the craft. We would love to see an ARMY of Kats!
